Middle East Solidarity
True to our name, the ISO has always been actively involved in international solidarity efforts. Though all of our members organize against wars and march and petition in solidarity with the revolutionary upheavals in the Middle East, the NYC district has many members regularly engaged in efforts to fight US imperialism in the Arab world.
In response to the Palestinian call for a global boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel’s apartheid state, the ISO helped launch Adalah-NY, one of the nation’s most active and effective grassroots BDS groups, the overwhelming majority of whose members are independent activists. Our work in Adalah-NY includes mobilizing efforts to pressure the pension fund giant TIAA-CREF to divest, helping shape and build creative protests in line with the call for cultural boycott, and participating in forums and teach-ins to educate others about Israel’s occupation of Palestine.
The Arab revolutions, especially in Egypt, led to the creation of a citywide Ad-Hoc Coalition to Defend the Egyptian Revolution. In this group, ISO members help build educational events, circulate statements and petitions, and help build protests and solidarity rallies. We have also attempted to build principled opposition to both U.S. and Russian imperialism in Syria. And the NYC ISO continues to collaborate with a range of long-term and ad-hoc initiatives to challenge all foreign imperialisms in the Middle East and build solidarity with the ongoing struggles for liberation and justice.
