Forty years after the women’s liberation movement, many of the gains of that movement have been rolled back and, in fact, there is a new war on women. While the mainstream women’s rights organizations have done little to respond, there is a grassroots rebellion developing against these attacks and the ISO is excited to be a part of it.

In NYC, we’ve been involved in many local campaigns in recent years.  Each fall, the the anti-choice campaign “40 days for life” has targeted an abortion clinic in the Bronx.  We have been part of helping to mobilize counter-pickets that have outnumbered the bigots and made sure that they were not able to harass women accessing vitally needed medical services.  In the fall of 2011, we helped to organize the local SlutWalk demonstration, which brought thousands of women and men together to reject the victim-blaming of rape survivors.  This spring there are demonstrations planned around the 40th anniversary of Roe vs Wade and against sexual assault and violence against women.

In addition to participating in demonstrations and pickets, we also regularly hold forums and teach-ins to try to publicize and discuss the different aspects of this new war on women.  We are organizing a speaking tour with Sharon Smith for the launch of her new edition of Women and Socialism.
