Hurricane Harvey: the toxic combination of capitalism and climate change
Hurricane Harvey has wreaked havoc on the people of Texas. We still don’t fully know the numbers of displaced, injured and dead, but we do know that capitalism exacerbates these (seemingly ever-increasing) catastrophes. Hurricane Katrina is one important reference point that shows how the powers that be try to take advantage of climate disasters like this to further their austerity agenda, or, as Naomi Klein calls it, they carry out a “shock doctrine.” The experience in New Orleans is an important memory to hold as tens of thousands of displaced people will urgently need aid in Houston, and it is not a given that the state will prioritize those needs. While capitalism tries to use natural disasters to further efforts at gentrification and defunding of public schools, our side sees that the money and resources are there to provide housing and aid to our brothers and sisters impacted by climate change.
We will be taking up collections to donate to the victims of Hurricane Harvey at this meeting.
The discussion will be followed by an organizing meeting where we discuss next steps for us as socialists in NYC.
