The City University of New York has provided a path to higher education for the working class of New York for generations. After the titanic struggles of the 70’s that opened the doors to NYC’s Black and Latino/a students, CUNY began a decades-long retrenchment of tuition and fee increases. Cuts to remedial education, the replacement of full-time, tenured professors with adjuncts, and the cracking down on student activism have undermined one of working New York’s most necessary institutions.
