It sucks being a millennial (but it doesn’t have to)

September 20, 2018 @ 8:00 pm

We are the most depressed, anxious, and debt-ridden generation in history. Hot takes everywhere, from The Wall Street Journal to The New Yorker, have blamed us for ruining everything from housing markets and mayonnaise to engagement rings and tourism; as if we don’t buy these things out of preference because of selfies and social media.

But what appears at first glance as a generational divide, is in fact an expression of a class divide and capitalism’s relentless pursuit of profits. We are the most educated and productive generation of labor in history, yet are economically worse off than any generation before. We earn 20% less than Gen. X for the same work, face unemployment rates double the national average, and will enter the job market with an unprecedented $1.5 trillion in debt.

Our parents could pay for college with a part-time minimum wage job while more than half of us can’t even pay the rent, on a full-time job, and all this while the world is burning and the seas are rising— alongside white nationalism. We know we deserve better. Capitalism has nothing left to offer us. Let’s fight for a world without racism, anxiety, oppression and exploitation.

We have nothing to lose but our chains!
