CeCe McDonald is an activist and a Black trans woman from Minneapolis. In 2012, CeCe was attacked by a group of neo-Nazis as she was walking to the grocery store. In self-defense during this racist and transphobic violent attack, CeCe shot and killed one of the Nazis. She was incarcerated in a men’s prison for defending herself– around the same time that George Zimmerman walked free for killing Trayvon Martin in “self defense.”
Free CeCe!, produced by actress Laverne Cox, tells CeCe’s story as well as the story of the international movement that aimed to free her from prison. The film’s director, Jacqueline Gares, will join us for a Q & A session after the screening.
This event is co-hosted by the LGBTQ+ Alliance, the International Socialist Organization, the Safe Zone Program, the Women’s Studies Department, and the Africana Studies Department at Lehman College. Thanks to the Student Government Association for funding!
