Justice for Stephon Clark: the Fight to Make Black Lives Matter
April 18, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The police murdered Stephon Clark on March 18th in his grandmother’s yard. He was shot 8 times, mostly in the back. He was unarmed. He was 22 years old. Here in New York, Saheed Vassell was killed in Crown Heights on April 4. The cops ran out of their car guns drawn and firing, murdering the 34-year old man, son, father, welder.
Clark and Vassell’s families need justice. Sacramento and New York City need justice. This whole entire world needs justice, and a fundamental change, because until then it is broken. Schools, healthcare, mental health services, food systems, working conditions, gender freedom, the list goes on–everything is broken by American racism and white supremacy.
The mass movement against gun violence renewed by Parkland students creates an opportunity for solidarity. The students have led by example, meeting and working with Black activists. But it also creates an opportunity for cynical co-optation and increases in racist policing, which Republicans and Democrats alike are taking advantage of, for example with Democrat NY State Senator Felder’s Bill 6798A that would put a cop with a gun in every school.
How can we end racism in America? How can we build solidarity? How can we win justice? Come to the Downtown Socialist meeting to discuss all of this and more.
