What Should Socialists Say About Gun Violence?

March 28, 2018 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Students in Florida have been inspiring in organizing themselves and standing up for themselves coming from the tragic school shootings last month. They are also connecting their struggle to that in Ferguson.

On March 14, students and teachers mobilized across the country protested across the country, walking out of their schools in reportedly the largest student demonstrations since the Vietnam War.

On March 24, marches across the country are organized for NYC – March For Our Lives // NYC – joining the March For Our Lives
But what should socialists say about gun violence?

We’ll talk about the roots of gun violence and how capitalists thrive on creating a culture of fear. At the same time, gun control measures can feed discrimination against minorities and those with mental health struggles – who are already most frequently the victims of violence. The militarization of our schools enforces the school to prison pipeline.

Socialist Worker and Haymarket Books author, Danny Katch, will be speaking on how socialists should respond.

Wednesday March 28 at 7PM | The Graduate Center, CUNY Room 5409.

All are welcome – you do not have to be CUNY affiliated but please bring ID for the front desk!
