Amy Muldoon, Verizon Worker and CWA Shop Steward
Kyle Brown, Socialist and Writer on US Working Class
The victory of the Verizon strike has demonstrated an invaluable lesson for all of us: when we strike, we can win. It highlights the possibility of rebuilding a fighting labor movement in a rapidly changing world. As we fight to rebuild this movement, some argue that capitalism in the 21st century has fundamentally changed the prospects for that fight.
But workers today have a lot to learn from the strike at Verizon. We have even more to learn from past struggles – the memory of which has been largely wiped out by decades of mostly defeats. The struggles that built our unions, and the lessons learned in them, are not a relic of the past, but are a necessity for building the fight for workers power today.
Come discuss the rich history of working class struggle in this country and debate its meaning for our struggles today.
