Last month, UPS fired Jairo Reyes without the fair hearing he was entitled to. Outraged, 250 other drivers walked off of the job to stand in solidarity with their fellow worker. UPS retaliated by sending pink slips to all 250 drivers. Teamsters Local 804 launched an impressive solidarity campaign involving drivers, customers and elected officials that forced the company to back down and bring back all the drivers – including Reyes. The drivers have paid a price – including a 10 day suspension. However, their battle shows it’s possible for working people to stand up and beat even the most powerful of corporations.
With Corporate America set on destroying union power in this country, there are likely to be a lot more battles like this one. Workers – union and non-union – need new strategies and renewed solidarity to fight this attack. Come to a meeting to discuss the campaign for the Maspeth 250 and what we can learn from their fight.
