In 2010, Obama signed the Affordable Care Act (ACA), the most significant overhaul in healthcare funding and delivery since the introduction of Medicaid and Medicare in 1965. Democrats argue that the ACA is a step toward fixing the broken healthcare system that has left more than 50 million without insurance, and is ranked among the worst of industrialized countries. Republicans argue that the ACA is a step toward socialism.
As Sean Petty argues in the latest issue of the ISR, the ACA should be seen both as part of “longer-term neoliberal restructring and the acute reality of the post-2008 worldwide government bailouts of the financial sector.” Rather than a reform that will benefit working class people, in reailty, the ACA dishes out more austerity.
