The NYC District of the International Socialist Organization is pleased to announce the next event in our Friday Socialism Series:
The Reparations Debate – The Socialist Case
We will be discussing recent debates around the issue of whether reparations are owed to the African-American community as a result of the legacy of slavery and racism, which has in many ways defined the material experience of that community.
The impetus for having the discussion now, arises from a debate and fascinating exchange between Ta-Nehisi Coates, the response of Cedric Johnson, and more recently the intervention of Brian Jones. The discussion and debate has implicated the elections, the approach to issues of oppressions, race, class, and economic justice.
Why Precisely Is Bernie Sanders Against Reparations? and Bernie Sanders and the Liberal Imagination by Ta-Nehisi Coates
An Open Letter to Ta-Nehisi Coates and the Liberals Who Love Him by Cedric Johnson
The Socialist Case for Reparations by Brian Jones
Socialists and the Case for Reparations by Brian Bean and Khury Petersen-Smith
This older but important piece by Ta-Nehisi Coates, The Case for Reparations, is where he more fully lays out the argument for reparations
a socialist and activist currently living in Brooklyn.
Please join us for the talks and a lively debate and discussion to follow.
